"Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering Ihrām], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj."

(Qur'an 2:197)

When you enter Ihrām, you enter a sacred bubble. The world outside continues, but you are no longer part of it. You have withdrawn from the ordinary to stand before the extraordinary.

The prohibitions of Ihrām are not restrictions—they are freedoms. They free you from vanity, from distraction, from the ego that separates you from your Lord.

What Is Forbidden in Ihrām?

For Men and Women:

  • 1. Removing hair or nails: Nothing should be cut from your body. Every hair, every nail remains as you entered.
  • 2. Using perfumes: Scented soaps, lotions, and oils are avoided. You stand without fragrance.
  • 3. Hunting or killing animals: All creatures are safe from you. You are a guest of peace.
  • 4. Marriage contracts or proposals: Even speaking of marriage is suspended.
  • 5. Intimacy: The Qur'an explicitly forbids rafath (sexual activity/intimacy).
  • 6. Acts of disobedience (fisq): Arguments and harsh words are magnified here. Guard your tongue.

Gender Specific:

  • 7. Stitched clothing (Men): Avoid garments sewn to fit—shirts, trousers, underwear. Two cloths are your uniform.
  • 8. Covering the head (Men): The head remains uncovered, exposed to the sky.
  • 9. Covering the face (Women): Women do not wear a niqāb that touches the face. The face remains uncovered.

The Wisdom Behind the Prohibitions

Equality & Patience

No designer labels or status symbols. Heat and crowds test your endurance until patience becomes worship.

Focus & Mercy

Removed from worldly comforts, you turn fully toward your Lord while ensuring every creature is safe from you.

Self-Control

By controlling desires for perfume and comfort, you learn to control the greater desires of the soul.

What If You Break a Prohibition?

If you forget, or do something unintentionally, there is no penalty. Allaah is Most Merciful.

If you intentionally break a prohibition, you may need to offer fidyah (compensatory sacrifice/charity). Consult a scholar for specific situations.

The Deeper Ihrām

Beyond the external restrictions, there is an inner Ihrām—a state of the heart.

“Your eyes should avoid looking at what displeases Allaah.”

“Your ears should avoid listening to vain speech.”

“Your heart should avoid entertaining whispers of pride, envy, or desire.”

The outer Ihrām ends when you complete your rites. The inner Ihrām should last a lifetime.

At Daarul-Hikam, we prepare you for both the outer and inner Ihrām.
